Torrance Regional Middle School Math Competition

Congratulations to the joint efforts TUSD and ExxonMobil for a successful 4th Annual Torrance Regional Middle School Math Competition (TRMSMC) event! The fourth annual Math Competition hosted by TUSD and sponsored by ExxonMobil took place at Hull Middle School on Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Thirty-two (32) teams consisting of five (5) students each in grades 6-8, from 19 middle private and public throughout Southern California, including seven Torrance Middle Schools, came together to compete face-to-face in this Competition.

Congratulations to the following Individuals and Teams achieving their highest scores:

Individual Event: 160 “Mathletes” participated
1st Place              Alvin Kim from Calle Mayor MS, TUSD
2nd Place              Kenton Kim from Oxford Academy, Anaheim SD
3rd Place               Caroline Choi from South Pasadena, South Pasadena USD
4th Place               Caroline Liu from South Pasadena, South Pasadena USD
4th Place               Steven Ren from South Pasadena, South Pasadena USD

Team Event: 32 teams participated from 19 schools
1st Place               Carmel Valley Middle School from San Dieguito UHSD, San Diego
2nd Place              South Pasadena Middle School from South Pasadena USD
3rd Place               El Roble Intermediate from Claremont USD
4th Place             Calle Mayor Middle School from TUSD

A very special thank to sponsor ExxonMobil Corporation including Barbara Graham, Julie Chao, Ben Riser, Robert Young as well as many volunteers who provided help with event set up, exam printing, recognition certificates, exam supervision and grading, and for providing and serving lunch.

ExxonMobil generously supported this event by providing volunteers and grants that made it possible to waive the registration fees of $100.00 per team to 11 Torrance Unified middle school teams.

Thank you to the following individuals for their support and assistant:  Mr. Barry Lafferty, Principal of Hull Middle School, and Mrs. Megan Wareham for their guidance and supervision; Mr. John Wider and Mrs. Lori Nagaoka along with CAMS students for serving  as competition scorers; Ms. Christina Pong, Mrs. Sue Berliner, Mr. Ted Yokota, and Justin Yokota (THS student) for assisting all needs throughout the day.

The TRMSMC is hosted by TUSD (Hull MS) and sponsored by ExxonMobil and organized by Mrs. Lan Yokota, a former Madrona parent volunteer.  The student competitors solved a 20-30 engaging, and challenging problems no a variety of mathematical topics. This produced an exciting atmosphere for students, teachers/coaches, and school administrators.
